THE CANADIAN ROCKIES
The Canadian Rockies have always been a boyhood dream for me, a place where true wilderness could be found, with towering mountains, huge rivers and forests stretching further than the eye can see. Hidden in that deep wilderness is the essence of its truly wild spirit, the Bear, wolf, Lynx, Cougar as well as the multitude of smaller creatures such as ground squirrels, marmots and Pica's, where habituating the wildlife is a no no and feeding the birds can get you a fine or get you thrown out of its parks!
Over the years i have visited several times, with hopefully many more trips to come (the next in 2010), during that time i have traveled throughout British Columbia and Alberta, always trying to cram in as much as possible but not really staying anywhere for long and getting a chance to get to know it intimately, thankfully for times between those rare trips our own country has something that is close to the type of wilderness that Canada has, even if it no longer has any bear or wolf! but it is a place i know almost as well as my own valleys.
SCOTTISH HIGHLANDS AND ISLANDS
Scotland is probably where we can claim to have any thing near to qualifying as wilderness in Britain, the far north west around Torridon, the Ardnamurchan Peninsula and Knoydart Peninsula, still holds a fear in the back of the minds for those back packers and walkers who venture into its interior, That fear stems from the lack of habitation and danger of accidents and bad weather rather than wild animals, however if this is what constitutes wilderness then the north west of Scotland can certainly fill a hole. Its mountains are rugged and wild, demanding the utmost respect from those that venture into them whether in summer or winter. Give it that respect and prepare properly and Scotland can offer a whole new view of the British landscape and wilderness.
